Have you ever had a song just resonate so much with your spirit that you could listen to it constantly? I certainly have. In fact there is one right now that I can’t get away from.

On the album Church Songs by Vertical Church Band is the song ‘Spirit of the Living God.’ I was floored the first time I heard it. It’s simple, but still such a powerful prayer for the Holy Spirit to speak into our lives.  Here are the lyrics.

Verse 1:
Spirit of the living God,
Spirit of the living God
We only want to hear Your voice,
We’re hanging on every word

Chorus:
Cause when You speak, When You move
When You do what only You can do
It changes us, it changes what we see and what we seek
When You come in the room,
When You do what only You can do
It changes us, it changes what we see and what we seek
You’re changing everything

Verse 2:
Spirit of the living God,
Spirit of the living God
We’re leaning in to all you are
Everything else can wait
Spirit of the living God,
Spirit of the living God
Come now and breathe upon our hearts
Come now and have your way

Bridge:
When You move, You move all our fears
When You move, You move us to tears
When You move, You move all our fears
When You move, You move us to tears
When You fall, We fall on our knees
When You fall, We fall at Your feet
When You fall, We fall on our knees
When You fall, We fall at Your feet

I so wish that there were more songs out there that dealt with the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. I’m not saying that because of my pentecostal heritage, either. I’m saying it because it’s theologically correct to acknowledge the role of the Holy Spirit.

In John 15:26, Jesus tells His disciples that the Holy spirit will bear witness or testify about Him. It is in the power of the Holy Spirit that we as believers are able to testify about Jesus as well.  Keeping this verse in mind, it seems reasonable to believe that when the Holy Spirit speaks into our lives, He will be revealing something about Jesus that we need to know.

Of course we also know that the Holy Spirit gives a variety of spiritual gifts to believers as well. These gifts are not something to be afraid of, but rather to be received. Receiving any of these gifts is a testament to the Holy Spirit’s power at work in our lives.

I say all this to make one simple point. Don’t be afraid of the Holy Spirit’s work. Embrace it. When a song like this one comes around that is such a powerful statement and prayer, sing it unashamedly. Make these lyrics part of your prayer life every day. Watch the Holy Spirit work and be amazed.
