This summer, our country was ignited with a simple phrase: Love Wins.

When the Supreme Court said that any two consenting adults could marry, cries of ‘Love wins’ echoed across the U.S.A.

Before you jump way ahead of me, this blog post is not about the issue of marriage equality. I have loved ones deeply entrenched on both sides of that issue and there is no good that could come from me stirring up a hornets nest on my blog. There is something else I want to talk about.

Like a tidal wave crashing over me
Rushing in to meet me here
Your love is fierce
Like a hurricane that I can’t escape
Tearing through the atmosphere
Your love is fierce
~Fierce by Jesus Culture

When I first heard this song from Jesus Culture’s recent release, Let It Echo, I was immediately drawn to thinking about the love of God. There is no other explanation for the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross than His love for us. John 15 defines the greatest love that we can ever experience.

God loved humanity, and wanted restored relationship with us so much that He sent His only son to this earth to live and eventually die for our sins. Here’s the thing. That is just the beginning of the story. You see while the death of Jesus brought forgiveness for our sins, God didn’t stop there. He wanted us to be able to spend eternity with Him. There was just one problem standing in the way of that. Death.

If we were to have the hope of eternal life, death must be defeated once and for all. When Jesus died, he was laid in a tomb. The Sanhedrin thought it was over. Pilate thought it was over. The disciples thought it was over. Jesus still had work to do. Three days following His death on the cross, he got up out of the grave in a demonstration of His victory over death. He was and is alive. Because of His sacrifice, those who accept Him as Saviour will have eternal life in Heaven. What an amazing gift that we have been given!

So you see. Love didn’t win at the Supreme Court this summer. Love won on a hill outside of Jerusalem two thousand years ago. Love has won!
